Institutions provide internship which is more inclined towards research while companies are interested in development and applications. Quite evidently both presume more or less good enough skill set with you.

As per saying of ideas, you can go for web development internships if youhave working knowledge of php or javascript and (or) python. You could apply in java apps development company in case you are making any iOS or Android thing......
